Got detoured through some very wealthy looking areas, you guys really do keep Volvo in business dont you.

Kinja'd!!!

In addition, your roads are painfully narrow.

Also, the fuck is up with yielding to get on the highway, this is my biggest pet peeve by far.

what part of north east?

welcome to doing 30 mph on highway merges instead of people actually accelerating to get up to highway speed

Some of the best driving roads I’ve found in the US were around Alabany, NY. Get out of the city and just hit the back twisties snaking through the hills. For a boy from Texas, it was fantastic driving.

Unfortunately my rental is a Ford Edge, so not really a performance oriented car.

CT is the worst, the freeways are some of the oldest there are, so onramps are short/non-existent. And there’s exits every 12 ft.

I’m in rural-ish PA right now.

I lived in ruralish PA for a couple years in high school. Such an interesting combination of southern redneckery and northern assholishness :D

Srsly, though, lots of great people and beautiful countryside throughout central PA and NY. Amazing roads almost everywhere.

The narrowness is usually because the roadbeds were laid over 200 years ago. In some areas, you’ll also see the houses are like 5’ from the road. Back in the day, you wanted the carriages to be able to stop at the front door. Today, scary as hell.

Rural PA is the worst road wise. So narrow... but there are some great curvy roads. If you get a chance to get up into central and western NY the roads get a little better.

But rental cars are the fastest cars on the planet (as long as you purchased the insurance)!

Yeah, I’m in a very blue collar area and I’m seeing narrow row houses on steep hills with rusty cars out front and factories damn near next door.

Its like “Huh, I’ve only seen this kind of a community in movies. Normally one with the tagline of staring Mark Wahlberg.”

Insurance? Bah! We don’t need no stinking insurance!

When I read this I had PTSD flashbacks from driving in the Pittsburgh-area for years. And I see from a comment you made that you are, indeed, in good old Pennsylvania!

Bruh, just wait ‘till you go further North. It’s the country. People didn’t have much need (or desire) to build enormous roads back in the day. After building around the same road, only in modern times is there a need to widen the road. As for the yielding, I don’t know. Not every highway does that, but there are a few. Normally they just want to make sure you’re not speeding onto an on-ramp.

The vehicles on the highway have the right-of-way, the vehicles on the on ramp need to yield. Is it different somewhere else? Seemed to be the same every where I’ve driven so far, as far south as Florida and as far west as the Mississippi.

The yielding to get on the highway thing:

Highway was built through existing towns/cities with eminent domain, some highways built way before modern safety standards. So they make them as narrow as possible. Meaning there isn’t room for proper merge lanes.
